Short-Term Disability (sometimes referred to as Weekly Indemnity) was designed to compensate an employee for income lost as a result of short-term absences from work from an accident or sickness. Short-Term Disability plans typically provide coverage on the first day following an accident or hospitalization and the 8th or 15th day of absence as a result of sickness. The benefits are usually payable for a period of 17 weeks. The benefit amount is directly tied to the employee’s earnings and usually pays out at a non-taxable schedule of 67.667% of earnings although higher taxable amounts such as 75% are available.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance or AD&D provides protection in the event that an employee has an accidental death or injury either on or off the job. Accidental Death & Dismemberment is also referred to as double indemnity insurance as the benefits payable doubles for employees who die as a result of an accident. The death benefit payable is most often matched to the Life Insurance benefit amount.

Most Accidental Death & Dismemberment policies cover both "loss" and "loss of use". A schedule of losses is provided by each insurer to show what amount of the benefit payment will be paid out on each loss or loss of use type. |
